Sexual assault case: Asaram remanded in four-day police custody

A special court in Gandhinagar on Tuesday remanded Asaram in police custody till October 19 in an alleged sexual assault case filed by two Surat-based sisters against the self-styled godman and his son Narayan Sai.

The police told the chief judicial magistrate that they needed to question Asaram at length as the case is over a decade old and the accused is very powerful.

In the FIR, the elder of the two sisters has accused Asaram of sexually assaulting her between 1997 and 2006 at his ashram while the younger sister has filed a complaint against Sai, accusing him of repeated sexual assaults between 2002 and 2005 at the Surat ashram.

Four days ago a Jodhpur court gave the custody of Asaram to the Gujarat Police. The 72-year-old controversial godman was arrested in Indore in August for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at his ashram in Manai. He has been in judicial custody since September 1 in Jodhpur.

Asaram and his son have also filed petitions before the Gujarat high court seeking quashing of sexual assault complaints against them.

Asaram’s lawyers in Jodhpur and Ahmedabad have rejected the allegations against the self-styled godman terming it a political conspiracy.

“The Gujarat case is politically motivated and it is government’s attempt to trouble Asaram and his supporters,” Asaram’s lawyer BM Gupta said.

Meanwhile, the bail plea of Sai, whose whereabouts are not known, was deferred to October 17 by another court.
