watsonNew Delhi, Monday, September 7 – Just a day ago 34 year old Australian player Shane Watson announced his retirement from Test cricket, taking everyone by surprise since fans assume a lot of cricket remained in him.

The decision with immediate effect has shocked many, especially when one of their key players Michael Clarke, who captained Australia for several years, did same sort of proclamation a few months ago after facing a shocking defeat in the decisive fourth Test held at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Watson’s retirement from the longest format is to create a void that will take a long span of time to be filled as he being one of the experienced Aussie cricketers, who were part of team’s success. His decision will certainly be a tough one for his men to accept.

Stature of this Australian all-rounder in the world of cricket is huge for his contribution as a player in the longest format. Post his debut a decade ago, he played in five Ashes series, including the lately played one where Aussies faced defeat at the hands of England. In 59 Test matches, he pocketed 3,731 runs at a batting average of 35.20. He took 75 wickets at a bowling average of 33.68.

Scoring runs in Test matches and other formats is important since this keeps players let their presence count in the playing XI as well as in the records’ book. Watson will continue to play one-day and Twenty20 cricket for Australia. To maintain good form in sport is a challenge and needs huge focus to do so. The pressure to log a victory increases every time player marks his appearance in the ground.

Mental and physical fitness is important in Test cricket. Given that he was able to possibly let the best out of him whenever being a part of team. A run of poor form was bothersome for Watson and the team on several occasions. None expected him bid adieu to Test career all of a sudden. Ups and downs are parts of life of the common man and players are no exceptions. Shane’s records on the field up till now are adequate to let people he has been a good player throughout his career. But injuries are often witnessed by sportsperson. He showed 5-wicket haul in Test matches for three times, scored 4 Test centuries and 24 fifties against different teams.

The highest total of him in Test is 176 runs. His records are impressive in ODI as compared to the Test matches.  Pocketing some specific runs for the team in 50-50 and 20-20 over matches will be the prime motto of this talented man from Australia and he houses the potential to be a game changer. Level of challenges will continue to be high for the reason that opponents never let the rivals gain foothold in different formats. Fans wished him luck for future on social networking sites and other mediums but continue to find an answer whether it was the right time for him to retire or not.
